ISO14001 Environmental Management System Certification

ISO 14000 is a series of standards related to environmental management aimed at helping organizations (a) minimize how their operations (processes, etc.) can have negative impacts on the environment (i.e., adverse effects on air, water, or land), (b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmental requirements, and (c) continuously improve in the aforementioned areas. ISO 14000 is similar to ISO 9000 quality management in that both are related to the production process of the product, rather than the product itself. ISO 14001:2015 specifies the standards for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). It does not specify requirements for environmental performance, but establishes a framework that companies or organizations can follow to establish effective EMS. Any organization that wants to improve resource efficiency can use it to reduce waste and lower costs. Using ISO 14001:2015 can provide assurance to company management, employees, and external stakeholders that environmental impacts are being evaluated and improved. ISO 14001 can also be integrated with other management functions and assist companies in achieving their environmental and economic goals. ISO 14001 is voluntary and its main purpose is to help businesses continuously improve their environmental performance while complying with any applicable laws. Organizations are responsible for setting their own goals and performance indicators, which help them achieve their goals and objectives, and subsequently monitor and measure them. This standard can be applied at all levels of the enterprise, from organizational level to product and service level. This standard does not emphasize the exact measures and goals of environmental performance, but rather emphasizes the measures that organizations need to take to achieve these goals. ISO 14001 is known as the universal management system standard, which means it is relevant to any organization seeking to improve and manage resources more effectively.
Before implementing ISO 14001, it is recommended to conduct a preliminary review or gap analysis of the organization's processes and products to help identify all elements of current and (if possible) future operations that may interact with the environment, referred to as the 'environmental aspect'. Environmental aspects can include direct (such as those used in manufacturing processes) and indirect (such as raw materials). This review helps organizations establish their environmental goals, objectives, and targets, which should ideally be measurable; Assist in developing control and management procedures and processes; And highlight any relevant legal requirements, which can then be incorporated into the policy.
Implementation Process
At this stage, the organization will identify the required resources and develop organizational members responsible for EMS implementation and control. This includes establishing procedures and processes, although only one written procedure related to operational control has been specified. Other programs are needed to strengthen better management and control of elements, such as document control, emergency preparedness and response, and employee education, to ensure that they are competent in executing necessary processes and recording results. Communication and participation among various levels of the organization, especially senior management, are important components of the implementation phase, and the effectiveness of EMS depends on the active participation of all employees.
Check - Measure and monitor the process and report the results
During the 'inspection' phase, performance will be monitored and regularly evaluated to ensure the achievement of the organization's environmental goals. In addition, internal audits are conducted at scheduled intervals to determine whether EMS meets user expectations and whether processes and procedures are properly maintained and monitored.
Take action based on the results to improve the performance of EMS
After the inspection phase, a management review will be conducted to ensure that the objectives of EMS are met, the degree of achievement of the objectives is achieved, and appropriate management of communication is carried out; And evaluate the constantly changing situation, such as legal requirements, in order to provide recommendations for further improving the system. These suggestions were incorporated through continuous improvement: updating plans or developing new plans, and EMS moving forward.
Qualification assessment
ISO 14001 can be fully or partially used to help organizations (for-profit or non-profit) better manage their relationship with the environment. If all elements of ISO 14001 are incorporated into the management process, the organization may choose to use one of the four recognized options to demonstrate that it is fully aligned or consistent with the international standard ISO 14001. These are:
1) Make self-determination and self declaration, or
2) Seeking confirmation of compliance from parties with vested interests in the organization, such as clients, or
3) Seeking confirmation of its self declaration from an external party to the organization, or
4) Seeking certification/registration of its EMS from external organizations.
ISO does not control conformity assessment; Its task is to establish and maintain standards. ISO has a neutral policy on conformity assessment. One choice is not better than another. Each option meets different market demands. Adoption organizations determine the most suitable choice for them based on market demand. Option 1 is sometimes mistakenly referred to as self “certification“ or “self certification“. According to ISO terminology and definitions, this is not an acceptable reference as it may lead to market confusion. Users have the responsibility to make their own decisions. Option 2 is commonly referred to as customer or second party review, which is an acceptable market term. Option 3 is an independent third-party program provided by specially trained professionals based on their participation in the activity. The fourth option, authentication, is another independent third-party process that has been widely implemented by all types of organizations. Certification is also known as registration in some countries/regions.
